What is Classical Pilates?
Classical Pilates is rooted in the original teachings of Joseph Pilates who developed the method and brought it to NYC in the 1920s.  He called it Contrology, focusing on control of the body through the mind. After his passing in 1967, the method became widely known as “Pilates.”

Pilates creates long, lean muscles, improving posture, and enhancing balance. It’s guided by six key principles: centering, concentration, control, precision, breath, and flow.

One of its most powerful aspects is how it works from the inside out, targeting the abdominal muscles often overlooked in traditional fitness methods, the transverse abdominis.  This is the deepest layer of the abdominal muscles, which acts like a corset to stabilize and support the spine.  Working in this way not only enhances core strength but also improves posture, balance, and overall movement efficiency.

The Powerhouse, a term used in Pilates to describe the core muscles — spanning from the diaphragm to the pelvic floor, including the abdominals, lower back, and pelvis— is the foundation of every movement in Classical Pilates. It generates strength and control that radiates through the entire body. Rather than relying on superficial muscle groups, this method trains the body to move in harmony, making it more than just exercise—it’s a transformative practice that builds strength, stability, and vitality for life.

Its benefits also extend to mental and emotional well-being. The practice’s emphasis on mindful movement and controlled breathing helps reduce stress, increase focus, and promote a sense of calm. Many practitioners find that Pilates becomes a form of moving meditation, offering clarity and balance that enriches daily life.

This holistic impact often inspires other positive lifestyle changes. As individuals build strength and awareness of their bodies, they also tend to adopt healthier habits, such as improved nutrition. A deeper connection to how the body feels can naturally lead to mindful eating, better food choices, and a healthier relationship with meals. Over time, these shifts, combined with the metabolic boost from consistent Pilates practice, can contribute to weight management and overall vitality.

The Legacy of Joseph Pilates
Joseph Pilates overcame childhood illnesses like asthma and rickets to develop his groundbreaking approach to wellness. During World War I, he innovated by using mattress springs to help rehabilitate injured soldiers—leading to the design of equipment like the Cadillac (which you will see at the studio).

Classical Pilates stays true to Joseph Pilates’ original vision, including his emphasis on flow and transitions, making every second of the workout count.  Every movement builds on the previous one, creating a safe, effective, and holistic workout.
